Tolmin lies in between mountains on the edge of Triglav national park so double check the route that Google maps suggests or you may end up on some very windy roads (nothing wrong with that if you are used to windy roads!).
Coming from direction of Ljubljana
- via Nova Gorica, recommended: The distance is 140 km and estimated time of travel is 2 hours as well as it is mostly highway. Don’t forget that you need a vignette to drive on Slovene highways.
- via Idrija: The distance is 100 km and it will take you around 2 hours to get from Ljubljana to Tolmin. The road is windy and there is big chance of construction work on the way which can cause some delay (10-15 minutes).
Coming from direction of Venice
First reach Nova Gorica and then follow the signs to Tolmin. It is a scenic 40-minute drive on a regional road from Nova Gorica to Tolmin.
